Identity and role

Lalita Clozel is a former Wall Street Journal banking reporter whose work has covered fintech-bank partnerships and bank-regulatory enforcement. Her coverage included Cross River Bank, a central PPP bank-of-record and fintech partner.

WSJ's author page identifies her as a former WSJ reporter who covered banking and fintech policy in Washington, D.C. Her LinkedIn page identifies a banking-regulation reporting role at WSJ and earlier experience at American Banker, where the public author page says she covered fintech regulation, anti-money-laundering, cybersecurity, and the FDIC.

Pandemic relief role

Clozel covered the regulatory tension around banks that built businesses around fintech partnerships, a beat that bears on Cross River, a major PPP lender and partner bank for fintech-originated volume, and on the later FDIC/OCC scrutiny of bank-fintech models. Both of her cited WSJ articles date from 2018, two years before PPP.

Where they are now

WSJ's public page now labels Clozel a former reporter. Muck Rack lists her as co-founder of Homelessly In Love and still associates her archive with WSJ and other outlets.

Clozel's 2018 Cross River coverage at the WSJ predates Gilles Gade's pandemic run by two years. FDIC scrutiny of the fintech-bank partnership model was already documented before PPP. Her broader American Banker and WSJ fintech-regulatory beat sits alongside AnnaMaria Andriotis's WSJ financial-institution coverage. The Cross River pandemic story is also tracked through Travis Johnson's 1607 Strategies LDA record.
