Identity & role

Ashley Hurt Callen. Washington, D.C. During the 117th Congress she was the lead Republican (minority) staffer on the U.S. House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis — the panel chaired by Democrat James Clyburn, on which Steve Scalise was the senior Republican. She is now a partner at Jenner & Block and Co-Chair of the firm's Congressional Investigations practice.

The Subcommittee's December 1, 2022 staff report, "We Are Not the Fraud Police": How Fintechs Facilitated Fraud in the Paycheck Protection Program, was a Democratic majority product issued by Chairman Clyburn. Callen sat on the opposing Republican side of the same panel; nothing in the public record indicates she authored, co-authored, or endorsed that majority report.

Career arc

Callen holds a B.A. in English from the University of South Carolina and a J.D. from the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University. She began her public-service career in the U.S. Senate (her Federalist Society bio names the late Sen. Strom Thurmond), then served in the Office of the Air Force General Counsel on suspension-and-debarment matters. On the Hill she built a senior Republican oversight-counsel résumé across several committees, per her firm and Federalist Society biographies:

  • Chief Oversight Counsel, House Judiciary Committee, under Ranking Member Doug Collins;

  • Deputy Chief Counsel for Oversight, House Agriculture Committee, under Chairman Mike Conaway;
  • and the lead Republican staffer role on the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, working with then-Republican Whip Scalise's team.

From committee staff she moved into House Republican leadership: General Counsel to Majority Leader Steve Scalise, and then, from November 2023, General Counsel to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

The exact title of her Coronavirus-Subcommittee role comes from her own and her firm's biographies, not an independent committee roster.

Lobbying & industry ties

None located. No Senate LDA or House lobbying registration surfaced under "Ashley Callen" or "Ashley Hurt Callen," consistent with a career as in-house congressional counsel and now a litigator. Congressional-investigations defense of the kind she practices at Jenner is legal representation, not registrable lobbying. She serves on the George Mason Scalia Law Dean's Alumni Advisory Board and the University of South Carolina McCausland College Board of Visitors; she was named George Mason's Distinguished Alumna of the Year in 2024.
