Identity and role

Alvaro M. Bedoya was an FTC Commissioner (Democrat) from May 2022 to June 2025 (FTC biography and AELP announcement).

Biography / career arc

  • Before: Harvard College; Yale Law School; chief counsel to the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law; founding director of Georgetown Law's Center on Privacy & Technology (FTC biography).
  • During: confirmed and sworn in May 2022; as one of three sitting Democratic commissioners he voted to authorize the Womply and Biz2Credit complaints on March 18, 2024. The FTC's release of that date records the vote as 3-0 .
  • After: removed by the White House on March 18, 2025 and sued with Slaughter over the removal (Protect Democracy; CNN captures); on June 9, 2025 he notified the court that he had formally resigned as a Commissioner because he "[could] no longer afford to go without any source of income," and the American Economic Liberties Project announced that month that he had joined it as Senior Advisor (Slaughter v. Trump, No. 1:25-cv-00909 (D.D.C.), memorandum opinion, July 17, 2025).

Pandemic-relief / PPP-EIDL role

The pandemic-loan cases were authorized 3-0 on March 18, 2024 by the only three commissioners then seated: Chair Lina Khan, Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and Bedoya (FTC release: vote 3-0). Bedoya was one of the three commissioners who sued OTO Analytics, Inc. d/b/a Womply and Toby Scammell, and one-third of the body that sued Biz2Credit and Itria Ventures.

Where they are now (2025–2026)

In June 2025 he joined the American Economic Liberties Project as Senior Advisor .
