Molly Claflin has spent her career at the intersection of law and politics, where her goal has been to use law as a tool to create change in the political arena. She is currently serving as Special Counsel at the U.S. Department of State. She previously worked as Deputy Staff Director and Chief Counsel for Investigations for the U.S. House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, where she investigated waste, fraud and abuse in the United States’ fiscal response to the coronavirus pandemic, as counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, where she managed the Trump-Russia investigation, and as Chief Oversight Counsel at American Oversight, a non-profit that investigates corruption in government. Molly also has extensive campaign experience, including doing crisis management for the 2008 Obama campaign, based in the Chicago headquarters. Before entering public service, she worked on securities law and financial sector investigations for a major international law firm. Molly has provided analysis on law and politics for publications such as the Washington Post, Slate, Time Magazine, Just Security, the Daily Beast, and the Los Angeles Times. A Truman Scholar, she holds a BA in political science from the University of Southern California, and a JD from Stanford Law School.
