The profile

President and CEO of IDology for fifteen years; Blueacorn used IDology's knowledge-based authentication in its PPP process until April 2021, per the House report. GBG plc acquired IDology in 2019 for about $300 million.

Identity and role

John Dancu was president and chief executive of IDology, Inc., the Atlanta identity-verification, age-verification, and fraud-prevention company, from late 2005 until early 2023. IDology sold identity proofing through its ExpectID products, including knowledge-based authentication — the "out-of-wallet" quiz that asks an applicant questions only the real person should be able to answer. Dancu was not the founder. A GBG-commissioned analyst note states he owned a majority of its shares at the sale.

The company's founding by Ed Eckland in 2003 and its move to Atlanta are cited to Crunchbase and a Florida corporate-records aggregator (the Bizapedia capture is a verification wall).

Biography

The 2006 announcement of his appointment (Smart Business Network) traces his earlier career: Robinson-Humphrey, K&G Men's Center, Netzip and Synchrologic. His education is not documented in the sources we have.

He joined IDology as president and chief executive, with the appointment announced in January 2006, and led it for about fifteen years (BanklessTimes). He was named to One World Identity's Top 100 Influencer in Identity list in 2019 (PR Newswire).

The company and its PPP role

IDology's part in the PPP record is knowledge-based authentication (KBA), which builds dynamic questions from public and proprietary records such as past addresses and prior phone numbers.

The House Select Subcommittee's December 2022 staff report says Blueacorn relied on Plaid, GIACT, Onfido and IDology, and that the company shifted from IDology's knowledge-based authentication to Onfido as its primary identity method in early April 2021.

Their own relief

We found no loan to IDology in SBA PPP and COVID-EIDL records searched under IDology's name; during PPP the company was a subsidiary of the UK-listed GBG plc.

No SEC, FTC, CFPB, or state regulatory enforcement action against IDology or Dancu appears in the public record, and neither is a target in the House PPP-fraud report. Two unrelated civil matters against the company (CourtListener dockets) resulted in no located finding of liability.

Where they are now (2025–2026)

GBG plc, the UK-listed identity-data company, acquired IDology in an all-cash deal announced in February 2019 for about $300 million (PR Newswire); GBG's RNS announcement put the price at $301 million, funded partly by a £160 million vendor placing, and described it as GBG's largest acquisition to date. IDology's revenue, EBITDA and Dancu's ownership share are cited to a GBG-commissioned analyst note; we do not have a copy.

Dancu stepped down as chief executive in early 2023. The January 2023 announcement of his successor, Christina Luttrell, stated that Dancu, who had been chief executive for fifteen years, would continue in an advisory role. His activities since then are not confirmed in primary sources.
