The profile

Co-founder and CEO of Postmates, which Uber acquired in 2020.

Identity & role

Bastian Lehmann — co-founder and CEO of Postmates, the on-demand delivery company, from its 2011 founding until its acquisition by Uber.

Career arc

Founder of Postmates, a U.S. food-and-goods delivery platform. Dara Khosrowshahi's Uber announced on July 6, 2020 that it would acquire Postmates for approximately $2.65 billion in an all-stock transaction, and Uber later announced completion (the completion date is in the Postmates profile).

Pandemic-relief / PPP connection

Uber's July 6, 2020 acquisition materials credited Postmates with "$643 million in Q1 gross bookings, growing over 67% year-on-year and over 50% quarter-on-quarter in Q2." Like the other gig platforms, it relied on a fleet of independent-contractor couriers, the self-employed population the CARES Act made eligible for PPP (as sole proprietors) and PUA. It was part of the gig-industry group (with Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and Instacart) that lobbied Congress on worker-classification legislation (The Intercept) and funded California's Proposition 22.

On March 10, 2020 Postmates announced a Fleet Relief Fund crediting couriers for COVID-related medical and check-up costs across 22 states (routed through a Starship "health savings vehicle"), non-contact dropoff, and a San Francisco pilot waiving restaurant commission fees. The company's VP of Public Policy, Vikrum Aiyer, argued for "creative and meaningful emergency support for frontline workers" while Postmates' "ongoing campaigns in California, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois" sought to modernize labor law for independent workers.

The Uber-Postmates deal was cleared by DOJ antitrust review before completion (CRA engagement note).

Government support / loans

We found no Postmates corporate PPP loan or PPP-fraud finding.
